One thing many people find hard to understand is some Italian customs and just the way people act.
Don’t expect small talk from people you don’t know.
Don’t expect servers to be bright and cheery, they are there to serve you, nothing more, you don’t tip so they don’t go that extra mile.
When having a coffee the water is a palette cleanser, it is not to cool your coffee down.
Don’t expect Italians to be prompt. The whole idea of on time doesn’t apply. In a small town even supermarkets might open late or close earlier.
Food is healthier, don’t expect to find what you are used to. For example drinks have less sugar or sugar alternatives, so will taste different.
Kids are just as likely to go to the toilet in the street, rather than walk looking for a public toilet.
Don’t expect the police to be out there stopping crime, they often stand around chatting, having fun. If you report a crime they will quite often tell you they will file with the tribunal if its about a person, they won’t generally get involved and arrest or even speak to the person.
You will find water fountains and taps in most towns and cities, and even villages. It’s quite normal to see people drinking out of them without a cup or bottle.
Gyms are not normal in Italy, and if you find one they are expensive. Italians walk etc.
Italians are often blunt, if you have put on weight, they will tell you.
